The Washington Post claims, "LEVYdance is a company to watch, now and in the future." Dance Magazine named Artistic Director Benjamin Levy one of the "Top 25 to Watch," and described his choreography as "a judicious balance of athletic and lyrical, brainy and sexy." LEVYdance was founded in 2002.
The company has performed full-length evening concerts at Dance Mission Theater, Dance Place , Joyce SoHo, ODC Theater, and has participated in numerous festivals such as San Francisco 's Summerfest/Dance, and Bravo San Diego. In 2003, LEVYdance was also chosen to be in residence at the ODC Theater in San Francisco where the company presented a work-in-progress at the culmination of the special two-week program. This residency resulted in the critical acclaimed work Holding Pattern (2004) that was premiered at the Cowell Theater.
LEVYdance represents San Francisco in the 2005 California Regional Dance Touring Project. This project promotes the diversity and excellence of dance that exists in California . This special tour of four cities includes performances by Tongue (Los Angeles), Jean Issacs Dance Theater (San Diego), and Jerry Pierson Dance Theatre (Santa Barbara).
Artistic Director Benjamin Levy has taught master classes at Dance Place , the University of Utah , and George Washington University . He set his work pOrtal (2002) on students at the University of Utah , and excerpts from Temporal Rust (2003) on students at George Washington University where he was artist in residence.
LEVYdance has received funding from the New England Foundation for the Arts/Meet the Composer to create a new work, Violent Momentum , in collaboration with composer Keeril Makan, to be premiered at ODC Theater in fall 2005. |
